June 17, 1918. Honorable Major General Crowder: If you are in need of men for the Army, read the Evening Telegram of yesterday (Sunday) You will see that at the race tracks, and at the beaches, there are thousands of young men of draft age, going around with girls, and the poor boys are fighting

Description In this letter to General Enoch H. Crowder, a mother suggested ways to find young men of draft age. She suggested going to dance halls to recruit the young men of draft age who are not yet enlisted in the Army. She also believed women of draft age should be required to join the Red Cross. This document is part of a collection compiled by Enoch Herbert Crowder, the Edinburg, Grundy County, Missouri native who served as Judge Advocate General. Crowder devised the Selective Service Act in 1917 which drafted America's forces during World War I.
