Letter to Enoch Crowder from Zephaniah W. Leone - August 19, 1917
Transcript
The Morning Mercury Editorial Department New Bedford, Massachusetts August 17, 1917 Dear General Crowder: I am overwhelmed by the attention you gave the Editorial in which I undertook an apology for the Exemption boards. I wrote it at a time when I was oppressed by the increasing responsibilities, which were discouraging some of us. Your letter revealed that there were human beings and human sympathy behind the system. The task [m.s illegible 1 wd] us is so trivial based the achievement you have carried out so mindfully, that I might feel ashamed to think that I mentioned our small trouble had it not been that it brought me your delightful letter of which I am very proud. It was most kind of you to trouble to read the Editorial and make reply at a time when you were so pressed with problems I greatly appreciate the letter- Very Truly Yours Zephaniah W. [last name illegible] Editor of the Mercury Member of Exemption Board Division No 3 Rec
