Letter to Enoch Crowder from Theodore Roosevelt - August 19, 1917

Transcript

(Copy) Oyster Bay Long Island, N.Y. August 19, 1917. My dear General Crowder: As I am writing to Harry Stimson, I shall ask him to give you this line of hearty congratulation and admiration for what you have done. I regard your work with the draft as one of the best specific bits of work our Army has done in my time; I knew you would do well, but I had no idea how very well it would be. I hope that now you will be given a field command -- just as I gave Weston a field, a line, command after he had done such capital work in the Commissary Department. I am a great believer in alternating line and staff duties where the man has it in him to do both kinds of work -- as you have. However this turns out, let me repeat that of all our people in the first six months of the war you are the man who has actually accomplished most, the man to whom all good Americans should be most grateful. I respect -- and I fear that I envy! -- the man who has earned the right to have this said of him. Faithfully yours, (Signed- Theodore Roosevelt)
