Box 31 Jamestown, Rhode Island [August] 6th [page 1] My dear General Crowder; My husband, Major R.W. Adams, of the Canadians (formerly in the U.S. Infantry as you know) has written me to find out for him if there is any chance of his being able to get re-instated. I quote from his letter; I believe now that I could be of great service to the United States as I know gas, bombing, bayonet fighting, physical drill, the new system of trench war-fare, the French system of platoon attack

[page 2] You read me? Would he also lose files, or would he take his regular number in the line of promotion? Or would he have to take a commission as second lieutenant? and would not the whole story there become public and all stand against his advancement in the service? He has done very well for himself in this new field he has chosen, & I do not want to send him any information that will raise false hopes and make him give up the good work he is now doing

only to have the great expense of coming home (which we cannot afford) & then finding his services would not be accepted. If he lives through the war, he will have an opportunity for a career in Canada, & if he is killed, the children & I will have a pension of about seven hundred a year & a grant of land. My own private opinion is that he had better stay where he is certainly for the present. If the time comes in the future where this country really needs men to lead her, he would always be ready to return. I am sure, & help do his part, however small. I also want to ask a question about my

[page 3] furniture which is stored at Fort Leavenworth. I see in the Journal that the government wants all such furniture removed, subject to notice. [m.s. illegible 1 wd] I to write & send the Quartermaster at Leaven worth my address in order that he may keep me informed as to what to do about my property? Description | In this letter, Elise Logan Adams wrote General Enoch Crowder about her husband's enlistment in the American National Army. Elise and her husband, Major R.W. Adams, were Canadians and Major Adams had been in the American infantry and wished to be re-instated. Mrs. Adams asked a series of questions concerning her husband's potential enlistment. This document is part of a collection compiled by Enoch Herbert Crowder, the Edinburg, Grundy County, Missouri native who served as Judge Advocate General. Crowder devised the Selective Service Act in 1917 which drafted America's forces during World War I. |
