Cleveland Ohio. July 8, 1918. Dear Sir, I am going to ask you to please investigate a case of a young man who should be in the army but for no good reason whatever has been placed in Class 2 on account of working at Government work. This young healthy strong man whose name is Louis Schwabe address 3562 Kimmel Rd. Cleveland [Ohio] Local Draft Board #5 Cuyahoga County, had until about two weeks before the questioneres were mailed in January very seldom worked and then only for a few weeks and then would loaf around for a while and then get another job and soon quit again. Two weeks before the questiones were sent to him he got a job working in a factory where Government work was being done, and through the (over)

[page 2] influence of an Attorney at Law who is a close relation of his he was allowed to claim exemption on the grounds of Government work which he should not have had as a claim for exemption. This man has a single brother also who was exempted because he is a city Fireman that part is all right but why should this young man be exempted on his Government work, he is not needed for support as his brother works everyday on the Fire Dept, his father works every day and his sister is making big money working for a Telephone Co. as an operator. I have two brothers in the Army and my people had not as much support as his has, one of my brothers was on the Fire Dept and he was drafted the other worked on Government work, and was drafted, but the whole difference is because my brothers,

Mr. Crowder as a good and honest Democrat which you and I are and we hope to be I am going to ask you to give all Democrats a fair show and put this man who has voted against our Party into the Army where he belongs and I hope to some day talk to you personally and shake your hand for doing the right thing to this man by putting him into the Army. This document is part of a collection compiled by Enoch Herbert Crowder, the Edinburg, Grundy County, Missouri native who served as Judge Advocate General. Crowder devised the Selective Service Act in 1917 which drafted America's forces during World War I. |
