April 3rd, 1918 Dear Mother and Father: There is only time for a brief note to tell you how relieved I am to receive the telegram concerning Harold. Altho I had no doubts as to the final outcome of the voyage, I had begun to grow somewhat apprehensive because the time seemed to be getting rather long. Now that he is over there I have every confidence in his performance of duty and have a most peculiar sense of security in regard to his safety. I am sure there can be only one outcome and I regret so much that I can

Description | In this letter, a young man named Thomas, who studied at Notre Dame, wrote his parents and explained his desire to fight in the war. He stated how he knew it would be dangerous, but he would regret it for the rest of his life if he did not enlist. This document is part of a collection compiled by Enoch Herbert Crowder, the Edinburg, Grundy County, Missouri native who served as Judge Advocate General. Crowder devised the Selective Service Act in 1917 which drafted America's forces during World War I. |
