[page 1] June 11 1918 Mrs Paerl Purcell 109 Third Ave New York Dear General I ask you in the name of god see that my husband is sent to the front to fight the Germans and not a defendless woman I am writing this letter to you with the worst black eye that a woman could carry one side of my face is as it allways was but the other is a sight to look this is the second beating in six months the seventh of January 1918 he beat me so that the Judge gave him 5 houres to get out

[page 2] of New York since than he is liveing in Brooklyn but will not work but sends to me to come over and give him his bed money and his eat money wich I cant not stand any longer if I ant got it he calls me the worst names and tell me to get out and make it with men on the street wich I will not do and whe I say I wont it is a blow well sir I went to his board 99 myrtle ave and the girl told me she done everything to help me but the doctor says his back teeth are bad but every other way he is healthy eat well and sleeps well but has no desire for work only the desire

This document is part of a collection compiled by Enoch Herbert Crowder, the Edinburg, Grundy County, Missouri native who served as Judge Advocate General. Crowder devised the Selective Service Act in 1917 which drafted America's forces during World War I. |
