Kind President Mr. Wilson I thought as Virgil Moss Lewis recieved a card classing him from 3 to 1 I would write to you for an exemption I am a poor widow woman no body to stay with me or do any thing for me but Virgil he isent stoutfull of arcypolis I have a little house he raises to tobaco & corn

and willing to help the soldiers all he can Dear President please exemp my only depenance I cant work I am cripled & stiff with Rhumatism I am not able to do anything Virgil has to work out & in dors his Father was once a soldier please let him stay with me I cant eat nor sleep I am so distressed & broken harted please answer & let me know I remain as ever Marchia J. Description | In this letter Marchia J. Lewis wrote President Wilson and asked for an exemption for Virgil Moss Lewis who worked for her. This document is part of a collection compiled by Enoch Herbert Crowder, the Edinburg, Grundy County, Missouri native who served as Judge Advocate General. Crowder devised the Selective Service Act in 1917 which drafted America's forces during World War I. |
