[Page 2] There was a stark necessity for such data. Question 12 educed this data and question 12 is therefore amply justified. You say that no one is entitled to claim exemption. I think that a careful reading of the law, a copy of which I enclose, will change your view. Your editorial error will be vigorously proved from the moment the exemption boards open for business when two out of every three men will do the very thing that you say they have no right to do. Then, my dear Doctor, I know that your sense of justice will impel you to recognize the intrinsic right and merit of the thing that has been done by a great soldier whose abundance of commonsense devised almost over night the best system that could have been devised for the execution of this sacrificial and burdensome law which reaches into two-thirds of the homes of the country with some very direct bearing. Description | In this letter Hugh Johnson wrote Doctor Albert Shaw, the Editor of the "Review of Reviews." in New York and praised the Selective Service Act as one of the most remarkable efficient efforts in Government administration. He criticized Shaw for not praising it more. Johnson stated that after a closer examination of the law, Shaw would surely change his mind. This document is part of a collection compiled by Enoch Herbert Crowder, the Edinburg, Grundy County, Missouri native who served as Judge Advocate General. Crowder devised the Selective Service Act in 1917 which drafted America's forces during World War I. |
