Description In this letter from Henry Kortjohn Jr., attorney at law in St. Louis, Missouri, wrote General Enoch H. Crowder and expressed his gratitude toward Crowder for his sentiment in his communication of declining the honor of Lieutenant General. Kortjohn also included a newspaper clipping from the St. Louis Republic dated July 6, 1918 entitled" Crowder Declines Promotion to Rank of Lieutenant General Offered to him by Congress." This document is part of a collection compiled by Enoch Herbert Crowder, the Edinburg, Grundy County, Missouri native who served as Judge Advocate General. Crowder devised the Selective Service Act in 1917 which drafted America's forces during World War I.
