House of Representatives U.S. Committee on Military Affairs Washington, D.C. St. Albans, Vermont, October 10, 1917. Major General Enoch H. Crowder, Washington, D.C., My dear General Crowder: I am happy that at last there is occasion to join with your multitude of friends and well-wishers in congratulating you upon your advancement to the grade of Major General, a promotion nobly earned and richly deserved. When the history of this War begins to take more definite shape in the consciousness of the American people, the remarkable part you have taken in preparing the country for the most tremendous, the most consequential military enterprise of all ages will be adequately recognized and pass into the school-books. I count myself fortunate in having enjoyed something like first-hand opportunity to see you work out the enormous mass of detail that were necessary to the success of your policy and to be able in some degree of familiarity to appreciate the statesmanlike as well as soldierly qualities you employed in your gigantic task. It was a superb accomplishment, to which you devoted many months of patient labor and a noble spirit of loyal Americanism. I salute you with great respect. Sincerely yours, Frank L. Greene
