June 4- Went to Camp Custer to see about enlisting. June 5- Enlisted in Chicago to be sent to 310th at Custer. Col. Wildman and Sgt. Stewert. June 6-17. LIVED " 17- Reported at Custer for duty. Started to pack for overseas. July 4- 36 Hour pass. Went home on 95 and back on 8. Short but sweet. July 11- K. P. Started for Camp Mills. Left on Train #5 at 5:00 P. M. Saw Detroit in day light. Royal recption. Passed thru St. Thomas [Canada]. July 12- Saw the "Falls" and beautiful scenery in [Pennsylvania] and [New York]. July-13 Arrived at Jersey City at 1:00 A.M. Took a ferry to [New York] and train to Mills.

Left port at 3:00 P.M. and saw the old Statue the last time until--. July-22- On water with 13 other ships. Sub. appeared in center of convoy. "Fire." Heard first shot of the war. Saw many soldiers. Good town. Boarded train III class and headed south. Went thru Sheffield and other towns. Nottingham. [August] 4- 3:15 A.M. arrived at Rest Camp at [Southampton]. Visited the Hospitals and saw effects of war. Marched thru [Southampton] at 1:00 A.M. and OH Boy! how dark. Subject to air raids. Not much to do. BROKE.

Everything War. Went to rest camp. COOTIES. Chinese labores and german prisoners. Learned French money. [August] 8- 4:00 P.M. Left [La Havre] for ?. Bought booze of the brakerman. Rode in box cars. Drilled in roads and set stations on hills nearby. Appointed panoramic sketcher and practised on hills. Excused from duty while studying. Learned wig-wag and semaphore. Met G. Bullock at Menetrol also Sgt. Biederman Had issue of "Bull" better than ice cream! First mail from U. S. A. at 10:30 P.M. Everyone up to read theirs. None from home.

[August] 24- Left Sancerre for the front. Still Singing. Tiresome ride Beautiful scenery. [August] 25- "TRAVELING" and kidding the French. Wondering where we are going. [August] 26- Passed thru [Dijon]. Arrived at Toul 6:00 P.M. Singing "You'll get over that after being here a couple of week", and we did. Slept at Marshall Ney barracks. Well satisfied. [August] 27- Gas drill with tin hats on. Air raid at night. All turned out to see it. French ran to dugouts. [August] 26-31- Same thing air raids.

[September] 1- First trip to Z. OF A. Big noise was awful. Ducked when our own batteries fired. GOSOUVERES. [September] 4- Moved to Ansauville 3 KM from front line. String wire at night. [September] 4-12 Worked every night stringing wire. Saw Bill Overholt and Homer Smith. P. C. of 67th Brigade also Division P. C. RAINBOW. Worried much about the noise to come. Went on detail on Artillery line. Saw four ballons shot down and one Boche plane [September] 12- 1:00 A.M. Big noise starts. All leap for the dugouts. No room for me so went back to the billet (barn). Left in train

[Flirey] and followed infantry with wires. Went on detail over trenches with wire on back. Saw dead bodies everywhere. Entered Essey and strung to Pannes. Saw fleeing Boche. Passed thousands of prisoners. Saw Bob Griffith at Essey, royal greetings. Started for Beney at 6:00 P.M. Put in cable and saw yanks digging in. Heavy barrage. Got in "bed" at 4:00 A.M. at Essey Town shelled. Rose at 5:15 A.M. and went on a detail. [September] 13- Worked near Montsec, Nonsard and Heudicourt under shellfire all day and night. Got first meal since drive started. Coffee and hard tack [September]-14- Real pancakes with 117th F. S. Bn. Still working. Ate dinner and supper

Saw large gas engine run by natural gas. All machinery made in Germany. Supt. of shop showed us around the place. Lots of girls work in shops. Taking chocolate to Mrs. Jaeger tonight. Had one wonderful supper. at Jaeger's. Sgt. Farmer M. S. C. Wheeler and myself present

[November] 30- Moved from [Bettembourg] to three km. from Grevenmacher. Slept on bed of hay in a room occupied by the boche when they withdrew. good rest. COOTIES [December] - 1 Beautiful day. Not cold. Rolled packs to move. Orders changed. stay all day. Grevenmacher billets filled another good nights rest. [December] -2. Rain. Stayed out of Grevenmacher all day. Can see hills of Germany from here. [December] 3- Reveille at 5:30 loaded and moved out at 7:00 A.M. Followed Moselle river out of Grevenmacher. Germany on one side and Luxembourg on other. Followed 3-tracks railroad. Crossed into Germany at 8:00 A.M. people happy. Went thru Trier a large modern city. Saw german officers in car auto with white flag. Lots of boys. All wear german caps. Gave ten cigarettes for a spiked helmit. Arrieved at River-Paulin at 11:30 A.M. Good billets. Nice people. good sleep. [December] 4- Still at River. German people want meat. Seem to like Americans. Belts, Iron Crosses etc. Lots of latrine wireless about going home. Sail [December] 20? Orderly. [December]-5- Still Co. Orderly. Some job. Did a little shopping. Post cards

awakened at 1:30 A.M. by loud talking fellow. Six shots fired. German and English language spoken. All still for half hour. American left. Five minutes later German left. Long coat & leather boots. Fired three shots. Ball and I shake for drinks. I win. Went down to look things over. Sure stacked the chairs. Guard of 405 drunk & fired shots. Will be home in a year. [December] 6- Moved up to Wittlich. Nice town. Bought cards, cakes etc. Need money. People very nice to us. Ball & self went to resturuant for supper. Hot chocolate, cakes and pie. Fine music and girls. Sleeping in dance hall.

Gold brick for six weeks make first, base or R.F. on ball team. Lots of traveling with team. Won every game at home. Lost the 2nd bn. 51st P. Inf. 4th C. A. A. School, 318th ENG. (tie, 3 inn.) Won at home from, all leans in 301 Regt'al league. 115th ENGRS.

[September] 12 began at 12:30 midnight. There was a drizzling rain and we we out on a 40 pr. cable A. T. S. to maintain same under fire. I was on No 5 post leading to a battery of 75's. At 1:00 A.M. the St. Mihiel drive started. 1700 guns from 3" to 20" opened up on the boche. At five o'clock the infantry went over the top and we were called in to follow up. Relieved by 405 Tel. Bat. Loaded trucks with equiptment and went to [Flirey]. Trucks had to wait for a road to be built over the trenches. Got to Flirey at 8 o'clock and went over to look at the trenches. Saw dead boche and Americans everywhere. One boche in dugout with brains in helmit. Arms, legs, heads, and in fact every-

part of human body lying on ground. Saw ten Americans in one heap. Helped bury boche. Went back to trucks and carried 30 miles of wire up to Essey. Strung wire all night up to Pannes and Nonsard. Got in bed at 4:00 A.M. in Essey and up at 5:15 A.M. to work. Look over switch board at Essey and Nonsard. Laid wire all day under light shellfire.
