Potsdam Komal 7. [March 6, 1916] My Dear Cousin! Thank you very much for the kind letters of last September and [December]. I hope you will have received my letter too, as it rumored that the English take all foreign post. Please wright always the above address. The post will forward me my correspondence. It is better than give you my full address, as it changes often. I am now major and commander of a cavallerie-regiment. We are all very well. It is very funny that our enemies think that soon we would not have enough to eat. The long duration of the war is our friend. Therefore in [Germany] all is military like organised. The living there is not much different from that at time of peace.

Last summer in the Battle of the Narew I was wounded by a shell but am now very well. We have very good sport that winter as here as always much snow. I hope you are all well. It is very nice from you that you help our [Red Cross]. The montains I like also. To have that sport we must travel till the south of Bavaria. The last years before the war I was often there. A motor car is a pretty and a practical thing. We have many of those. Please remember me to Elsie and Tomie. With kind regards I remain Sincerely your cousin Fritz v. Versen.

Description | Fritz Von Verson wrote his cousin, Mary Clemens, of St. Louis, Missouri, several times during World War I. Von Versen was Captain and Eskimchief in the body guard Calvary, Husar Regiment of the German Army. In his letters, Von Versen described the events of World War I from a Germans perspective. He discussed his experiences on the frontlines and was often critical of the Allies and their tactics. Von Versen's letters predated the United States entry into the war. |
