[Hotel Negresco letterhead] No 40. 8:00P.M. December 12, 1918 My dearest Mother. I certainly am ashamed of myself. It is nearly a month since my last but I have been frightfully busy and pushing my leave to beat the band and can you believe it I am actually on leave. Not a damn thing to worry about for seven days. I arrived here at 5:45 so naturally have not seen much but it seems like heaven. I imagine it is very much like southern California, It is almost tropical and it is the only place I have seen in France that I have

not been disappointed in. Hope I wont be in the morning. Mt good friend Mr. Gygi proprietor of the hotel de France Nantes who charges me 35 francs a day for a room & bath but no toilet told me this was the best hotel. Holy Mike when I saw this place I almost put my tail between my legs and beat it. It is the first real hotel I have seen in France. However I got up my courage enough to ask the price of a room & bath (I thought I might as well start out big) and I almost fainted when they told me that for American Officers the most expensive room & bath was 35 francs. I finally picked out a room for 20 frs a day with a great big double bed a dressing
