[War Department letterhead] For Lieut. Schneider, Room 272, State, War and Navy Building To Mrs. Clarke The records of this office show that Powhatan H. Clarke was enlisted June 4, 1917 in the Signal Enlisted Reserve Corps, Aviation Section, and assigned to active duty on the same date at School of Military Aeronautics, University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois. The records further show that he accepted appointment as 1st Lieutenant, Aviation Section, Signal Officers Reserve Corps, November 27, 1917 and was assigned to active duty in orders dated December 3, 1917. He left the United States for service in France January 4, 1918, where he served continuously until return to the United States October 4, 1919. He was honorably discharged as 1st Lieutenant, A.S.C., by direction of the President, for the convenience of the Government, at Camp Dix, [New Jersey], October 25, 1919. [William] A.
