[WAR DEPARTMENT letterhead] MEMORANDUM For the Chief Staff The records of this office show that Powhatan H. Clarke was enlisted June 4, 1917 in the Aviation Section, Signal Enlisted Reserve Corps, and assigned to active duty on the same date at School of Military Aeronautics, University of Illinois, Urbana, [Illinois] The records further show that he accepted appointment as 1st Lieutenant, Aviation Section, Signal Officers Reserve Corps, November 27, 1917 and was assigned to active duty in orders dated December 3, 1917 and ordered to proceed to Garden City, [Long Island New York] to report to the Commanding Officer, Aeronautical Concentration Camp, for assignment to a squadron. He was assigned to the 21st Aero Squadron December 24, 1917 and left the United States for France on January 4, 1918; he was relieved from duty as Adjutant, 21st Aero Squadron February 10, 1918, and assigned to duty at Third Aviation Instruction Center; transferred to Second Aviation Instruction Center in orders dated April 29, 1918. On June 17, 1918 he reported to Deputy Chief of Staff, Headquarters, Service of Supply, for reclassification and was assigned to duty with Administrative Labor Co. No. 101, transferred to Advance Ordnance Depot NO. 4, July 9, 1918. He is shown as in command of 133rd Administrative Labor Co., Army Service Corps from July 10, 1918 to January 15, 1919 on which date he was relieved from command and assigned to duty with Company. On February 21, 1919 he was assigned to duty with Renting, Requisition and Claims Service, Base section No. 1, S.O.S., St. Nazaire and ordered to proceed to Camp Dix [New Jersey], where he was honorably discharged October 25, 1919, by direction of the president, for the convenience of the Government, as 1st Lieutenant, Army Service Corps, having been transferred to that branch of the service in Special Order 307, paragraph 25, General Headquarters, A.E.F., November 3, 1918. Description Powhatan Hughes Clarke served with the 21st Aero Squadron and the Labor Bureau A.E.F. during World War I. He died from tuberculosis August 20, 1920. Clarke's mother, Elizabeth Clemens Clarke, corresponded with her son
