Henry C. Coe letter to Elizabeth C. Clarke - October 16, 1922

Transcript

[Army and Navy Club of America letterhead] [October] 16, [1922] Dear Mrs. Clarke, Your note of the 11th is just received. I regret that I can not recall the name of your son and he must have met me only casually, for I was never stationed at St Nazaire, in Issoudun, though I sailed from the farmers back in July 1919. I was the only Major Coe in the Medical Corps and was at the front from March 1918 until after the Armistice. Cordially yours, Henry C. Coe. ( 45 E. 62nd fr.)

Description Powhatan Hughes Clarke served with the 21st Aero Squadron and the Labor Bureau A.E.F. during World War I. He died from tuberculosis August 20, 1920. Clarke's mother, Elizabeth Clemens Clarke, corresponded with her son's friends and acquaintances to determine if he had contracted tuberculosis while serving in the military. Mrs. Clarke also corresponded with the doctors who attended her son in his last illness, apparently convinced that he had not received proper treatment. In this letter to Mrs. Clarke, H. C. Coe explained that he was the only Major Coe in the Army and that he never served with her son.
