Invocation Delivered by REV. FRED M. BAILEY Pastor of The Washington Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church, Kansas City, Kansas. Almighty and Everliving God, in whose presence we stand with bowed head today, look thou upon us and be gracious unto us. A Prayer Offered by RT. REV. THOMAS F. LILLIS, Bishop of Kansas City. Standing in the Majestic presence of the Triune God, before this august assembly of the great municipality, we are gathered to commemorate the memory of our heroic dead who are sleeping their last sleep and many of them are resting in the fields of France. We dedicate ourselves to the noble cause for which they consecrated their precious lives. While we treasure our martyred dead, we also cherish with whole-hearted devotion those who stood behind them, those who with saddened hearts, yet with patriotic ardor, bade them go to fight the battles of right and justice. Rightly then by reason of Thy propitious providence in our regard, O, Omnipotent One, Who has written on Tablets of Stone;

Acceptance of the Gold Star Flag by COL. E. M. HARBER. City Counsellor of Kansas City. Mr. Chairman and Fellow Citizens of Greater Kansas City and Jackson County: It is especially appropriate that we should pause in our hearty, sincere, glorious welcome of our home-coming heroes to give consideration to those brave heroes who have made the greatest sacrifice it is possible for mortal man to make, and who sleep today in the fertile fields of France. In the life of this nation at different times have we instinctively turned to that flag. To read its story carries us back to the old hall in Philadelphia, where our forefathers gathered, writing something which they believed to be true about a man, any man, just because he was a man. They were writing that all men are equal in their inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and that the authority to govern them must be the creation of their own divine right to choose. Out of the womb of that faith was born this nation and these stars and stripes became the emblem of that faith, became the emblem of the human race, and its beauty is radiant with the gathered glory of our past, and in that life is revealed the soul of this great nation. This flag has never been unfurled in an unjust, or in other than holy and righteous, cause. And Mr. Chairman and fellow citizens in behalf of the mayor of this city, who is unavoidably absent and in behalf of the patriotic people of this city, which means all the people of Kansas City, I accept this beautiful flag representing our departed heroes, who gave up their lives to maintain the principles for which this flag stands and is emblematic, promising, if desired, an appropriate place therefor in the archives of this city, that it may be viewed by coming generations in remembrance of the noble deeds of these departed, and as an inspiration to love of country, loyalty to government, devotion to liberty and the freedom of the human race. The denunciation, yea, destruction of the claimed divine right of a cruel, intolerant, inhuman Kaiser and bigoted people of any nation to subjugate and govern the world. Let us ever remember these more than five hundred from our midst who have crossed the river that marks the
