[Base Hospital Fourteen Letterhead] A.P.O. 780, American Expeditionary Forces, October 20, 1918. Mrs. Lottie Hewitt, 3324 Wayne Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri. Dear Madam: It is with sadness and deepest regret that I write you of the death of your brother, Clyde, who passed away at this hospital in the evening of October 16th. You may be assured in the knowledge that every medical and surgical aid was given and that he was laid to rest according to the rites of his church and with the military honors he so greatly deserved. At such a time as this there comes the full realization of the fact that no words of mine can console you for the grief that is yours; yet I cannot refrain from tendering the heartfelt sympathy of this command. In the dark hours of your bereavement we trust that you may receive some comfort in the fact that he gave his life in the noblest cause of God and man and which embraces those greater and finer principles of Right which are immortal. It is for such as these that the present and future generations will give to you and to the memory of your brother the deepest gratitude. In all sincerity, I am Yours very truly, W.W. Vaughan Lieutenant Colonel, M. C., Commanding.
