Brussels Belgium June 11th [1919] Mrs Lottie Hewitt Have received your kind letter dated May 8th after a long delay it finially arrived. was glad to hear from you indeed as I know how you feel after what has happened and if I can be of any service to you I will be more than glad to do any thing I can to help you. until the last. before Clyde was sent to the hospital I sat up and gave him medicine but it didnt seem to help him any so I went to our captain and asked that Clyde be sent to the Base Hospital. that was immediately after we came out of the Argonne drive. I hardly know how to write you as I dont want to make you feel bad, yet at the same time you are very anxious to know and find out all you can about him. Now as to Clyde

Description | Letter from Sam Hobart to Clyde Chilson's sister Lottie Hewitt. Hobart was Chilson's bunk mate and friend while in France. He informed Clyde's sister that Chilson was gassed and became very sick. Hobart was the one to admit Chilson into a hospital where he eventually died of pneumonia. Both men served with Battery B, 129th Field Artillery, 35th Division. |
