From: Inspector of Machinery, U.S.N., St. Louis, [Missouri] To: Busch-Sulzer Bros.-Diesel Engine Co. Subject: Discontinue of Shipbuilding Labor Adjustment Board. Gentlemen: -1. There is quoted below for your information, letter from Secretary of the Navy to Compensation Board, #28470-42:446 of March 19, 1919: "The Shipbuilding Labor Adjustment Board will cease to exist on March 31, 1919, and the agreement between the Department, the Emergency Fleet Corporation, and the American Federation of Labor, under which the Board was organized, will terminate. The decisions of the Board now in force will, however, continue to govern the settlement of accounts on Department cost-plus shipbuilding and ship repair contracts, until further orders, to the extent that no wages in excess of the scales promulgated in those decisions will be allowed unless previously approved by the Department. This order will be promptly called to the attention of all contractors concerned." Very respectfully, L. Shane Attention: Mr. J.R. Harris.

Shane informed Harris that the Secretary of the Navy discontinued the Shipbuilding Labor Adjustment Board. The Shipbuilding Labor Adjustment Board was a product of the war emergency to protect laborers while promoting shipyard production. |
