F Deselektro January 28, 1919. Mr. Fred B. Whitney, Deselektro Company, Evans Building, Washington D.C. Mr. dear Whitney: - I know you will be interested to learn that we have tested and shipped the two 900 B.H.P. two cycle engines for submarine S-2. All tests were conducted most successfully, and I feel that they are the best engines we have built. Mr. Brill and Commander Fisher were in St. Louis during the holidays to see one of the engines running with the new Lake clutch attached, and both expressed themselves as being well satisfied with the performance of both the engine and the clutch. Yesterday morning at nine o'clock we commenced the official tests of the first engine for submarines S-14 to S-17, and completed same successfully this evening at 6:15. The test consisted of three two hour tests, and a one one hour test at different loads, and on twenty-four hour consecutive run test at full load. The lubricating oil consumption was 1.3 gallons per hour, and the fuel oil consumption about .44 pounds per B.H.P. hour. The engines for the S-14 and S-17 are 500 H.P., four cycle, non-reversing, and the engine which we have just tested makes the 27th engine of this size and type which has gone through its official tests without the slightest casualty, not even the breaking of a spring. We expected to have the remaining seven engines for submarines S-14 to S-17 tested and shipped on or before February 28th, 1919. When I was last in Washington, your worthy assistant, Mr. Hanlon told me that you were in Waukegan, and expected to stop off in St. Louis before your return East. I do not know that you are at present in Washington, but presume so on account of the answer to my telegram. Hoping you are in good health and with kind regards, I remain, Yours very truly, JBH ID
