[September 26, 1914] Mr. J.R.Harris, G.M.and 2nd V.P. Busch Sulzer Diesel Engine Co. Saint Louis, [Missouri] Dear Mr. Harris:- You have no doubt read of the wonderful exploit of the German Submarine U.9. which on Wednesday morning ran from Wilhelmshafen to Hook of Holland, there destroyed 3 British cruisers of 2200 tons each and re returned to Wilhelmshafen without being seen or reported altho that is about as busy a piece of sea as Long Island Sound. The distance is about 240 miles, the round trip therefore 480 miles. My first thought was only a Diesel boat could do that, and that is what she proves to be. Now, 2nd thought----I reported to you from Paris in 1910 that the old clumsy French Diesel Submarines I saw there had made similar runs on trial trip trips from Cherbourg. That is, the tools were ready then! The German Government took it up and trained the skilled men to use them. Some months ago a prominent English Naval officer created a stir in England by an article in a Naval paper arguing that the Submarine was far enough advanced to make the building of any more dreadnoughts on big cruisers a criminal extravagance and absurdity. Here the German daredevil furnishes the proofs. This boat was either built at Germania Works Kiel, or at Nurnberg and is possibly not equal to Sulzer
