NATIONAL WAR WORK COUNCIL ARMY AND NAVY YOUNG MEN’S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATIONS “WITH THE COLORS” Camp Funston 3/2 1917 Darling Mother & all, Reed the paper alright but no letters so far. The weather has been fine this week, but the wind & dust is so fierce. It gets cool every night. We have plenty of good substantial food & bed cloth. Eight men to the tent and each have a simple cot, & stove in tent. Have two bath houses. There are about twelve thousand down here at this detention camp, and when they all line up it looks like all the men in the world. There are about sixty thousand at Funston. The barracks are there and its much nicer there. Have picture shows & etc. up there. We are at Camp Wood right on the bank of the Kaw River, about two

Direct north of Junction City, & seven miles west of Funston. Fort Riley where Clara is about half way between Funston there. You can see both Riley & J City plain. We are right at the foot of the big rock hills, maybe Dad knows where it is. I havn’t seen Clara yet, but don’t guess he has had time to come over. We are quarantined. These vaccinations & nose swabs & ect they give you are -L-. There are deformed guys of all kinds here. My teeth are going to the bad fast and there are dentists here, but I’m going to stay away from him. [illegible] lots of fellows out here. weather is good so every one can hear it. You [illegible] to write as it is jammed all the time. I took out the ten thousand insurance. Had the policy made half to you & half to Nettie. Mamma, the next time Nettie comes out, tell her to take those hide rugs of mine and have them faced, they will keep better. I see them down here and they look nicer with pink or green facing. I have been thinking of getting into the calvary. That’s the only thing I see. I will be here about a week yet & then go to Funston. They may ship us away from there. Well dear mother, its getting late & I must close. Because writing as I have my knee for a desk. Write when have time. With all my love Gene.
