[October 24, 1918] "Dugout in France-" Dear Sis:- Have a little time so will write you - have thought of you often and hope that you like your work and will make every opportunity count - have had several letters from home lately - all seem to be OK - Well Sis we were in the last big drive - my but it was just what, Sherman said "War is hell" - we lost several of the home boys killed and wounded - can not give you names - I sent a cablegram home as soon as I got back where I could - we came out, rested for just a few days and went in trenches - we are now in trenches on a quiet sector - having cool damp weather - guess it is drawing close to winter time - sure hate to see bad weather start - I am feeling OK -[MS illegible] I hear from Louise real often also

Miss Bertha - so you know I get all the town gossip from her - how's school - hope you like it and are having a good time - say Sis I have a few hundred in the bank at home if you need it dive in on it as I dont need it - told Dad to use as much as he needn't - so if you are running short help yourself - I need only a few "francs" - don't suppose there is marry left at home. too bad about Christine - feel sorry for Perry and little Garner - Did Effie go to school and where? - did her and Claude ever break up? - Ruth, apply yourself and get all you can out of your school - when you get homesick just grit your teeth and go ahead - hard, how well I know but it can be done cause I have done it lots & lots of times - keep busy and don't get idle - I have found that the best remedy of all - be careful of your associates - watch yourself - have a good time - you know right from wrong so do it - a girl
