[January 20, 1918] Dear Mother: - Today I believe is your birthday - Fifty one years of age - but that is not old - you are just in the age when nearly all of your children are grown and can cease their worrying you - they are now where they can be a help - and I hope that all of us will be. I beign the oldest should take the lead. I have seen life from both sides and have profited by it. You should be a happy mother for you have a son who is under the Stars and Stripes ready at a moment's notice to lay his life into the hands
