[September 19, 1917] Sat. nite - Dear folks: - Received your letters and certainly glad to get them. Glad that you all had a nice trip and enjoyed it so - also that you both are better pleased than you were before you came. I certainly did enjoy your visit down here - didn't have as much time to give you as I would have liked to but had to attend to duties first. am going to make good - got my suit today - fits fine - been lots of Rich people here this week - don't know when we will go to [Fort] Sill- Lt. Col. Clark leaves tonite for [Fort] Sill to take a course in muskery & drilling now with guns - getting along fine. I believe we are in the prize of everything - companies and battalions. Yes, papa if ou want to show that letter to mamma you can. glad she is better satisfied - no use to worry cause I am coming back a better man and with lots of good experience - fine training for any man - just leave it to me you will be proud of your son when he returns as a hero instead of a shirker- don't have to be rocked to sleep at nites - sleep fine and get up early and don't mind it - can you imagine me not minding to get up in the mornings - had a rain here

this morn - or rather early this morn - was in charge of the guard for the regiment yesterday and last nite - didn't get wet - had my rain coat and boots - they sure are handy - am feeling fine - want you to take good care of the queen while I am away - going to try to get her to come down with a bunch of girls. would be a nice trip for them - not much news to write about. received the envelopes this morn - glad to get them. guess the children are busy studying these nites - yes I get the Richmond papers thru some of the boys - they get some and I always get a look at them - is business getting any better - it will begin to pick up now - will close and write again as soon as I can - Hello to everybody - write when you can. Tell all the children hello. Tell Ruth will try & answer her letter soon. always write to all of you in one letter - goodnight, Your loving son Kirk
