[October 29, 1917] Sun. morn. Dear Folks: - Have been rather slow in writing you last nite but it was a little late so I put it off till this morn. we have our tent floored, walled and a stove in it. have a glass in the door - some style to us. some is warm and nice. received my sweater and am certainly proud of it. sure is nice and warm. wrote Elizabeth last nite - bought me a heavy coat yesterday, sheeplined and it just fits the bill for this cold weather. received your box and the chicken and fruit were certainly fine. box in good shape. We had a regular feed on that chicken. am going to school studying grenades. like it fine. have heard some fine lectures by a French officer just came out of the trenches in August. have never met the Capt. that papa referred

to in his letter - the gas school is over at the Fort and I am at Division Headquarters. am going to try to look him up. several hundred drafted boys cmae in this week. the boys say that "Happy" Creason from Cerrick is in the bunch. have never seen him. had a letter from Morton - he says he has been sick for about 2 weeks. he told me not to worry that things would turn out O.K. in time - that he would get busy and see just what was what. well you say nothing doing on your SE trade. Well things will pick up some time soon. I bought $250 00 worth of Liberty Bonds - pay $25 00 per month for 10 months. Thought that was a good way to save some money - we have never been paid for Sept. and now it is time for Oct - guess get them both at once. I owe Woolf's for clothes - about $40 00 and Greenfield's $40 00 for that suit so I

think that is all - will send the rest home what I owe you want you to take it out. that life insurance money advanced and so on. want you to sum up all the money I owe you and send it to me - now papa include everything in that - I want to get all bills settled up. now think of everything and send it to me. am feeling fine. fine day today - no wind as yet. but guess it will start after awhile. don't have any desire to go anywhere. looks like furloughs are going to be very scarce. am going to try for one about last of next month but dont expect to get it. of course Col. will O.K. it but now we have highter ones and is not like it was at Nevada. How is everybody? Tell all helo for me - in a letter to me some time back you said to quit writing to that "grass widow." don't know who you refer to unless it is that girl at Lillards. I have

never written her since you were down at Nevada. never saw her while at home or don't want to - the only girlI write to is Elizabeth. wrote Miss Bertha last nite. yest I must write Uncle Bill. will try to do that today. would like to write to several people but just haven't got the time. will close and write you again soon. am O.K. - goodbye Lots of love, your loving son Kirk.
