Mon - Night. [October 2, 1917] Dear Folks: - In our new home at last. sure is some large place - 56,000 acres - arrived here yesterday morn about 11.30. tired and all worn out. left Nevada Sat. morn at about 11 o' clock. was to leave Fri. morn but our train was the one that was wrecked. struck camp Fri morn. had to sleep in box cars Fri. nite. I was up all that nite seeing about things. Sat nite got a fair sleep - on the train 24 hrs. some tiresome ride. everyone stood the trip fine - put up tents all day yesterday and this morn - started drilling this afternoon - things sure look big down here - aeroplanes and ballons flying above you - cannons firing on one side and drilling soldiers every where things are just in fair shape for us - big gang of men working all time- some sight to see . Col. & the Major said today that their would be no consolidation - sure hope they are right. have put it off to [October] 11. Gov. Gardner meets with Sec. of War today. we have heard nothing as yet - sure some mountains here - saw lots of Indians yesterday, have not had time to look around any as yet but am going very soon - today

has been one of those wind storms of [Kansas] & [Oklahoma] - sand blowing all day, everything in tents & out just covered, sure makes a fellow feel blue to get in a place like this - but we have all had it out yesterday & today so are getting to feel better now - sure looked tough yesterday. want papa to come down when we get things straightened out better. some sight to see - have a fine mess hall & cook place, seats about 150 men or 200 - nice big kitchen & ice box like butchers have - we are going to have 6 1/2 hrs drill a day school & study which all amounts to 12 hrs work & 12 to sleep & eat. was issued to the men cots & raincoats today. another bunch of stuff tomorrow to give them. tell cousin Wat to let me know when he is coming. long ways down here, we are still torn up. expect to get straighted this week, see curly stepped off. didn't think it of him. well, that will not keep him at home, was a surprise to me. he has lots of business marying in his shape. in debt and expecting to go to war - none of that for me, will write you again soon and tell you more news - send me the county papers as I have been missing out. the ones you all get when you finish just send them on to me.
