[October 19 1918] Dear Folks - Still in the trenches having a good time as everything is quiet - I am now sitting in my dugout with a nice warm stove and candle burning writing to you - can you beat it? - just got the supper and a good smoke from my pipe of peace - I am feeling fine - stomach is OK and in good time - am enclosing my Xmas card which all soldiers have to send home if a Xmas box is to be sent to them - you can send me anything you want to - do not send socks as I have plenty - just send what ever you want to as I cannot think of anything right now - might send me a helmet as I have lost mine - cigars & candy - just a little as it weighs so much - anything you think I will need - do not know whether you can send other boxes by paying for them or not but I expect you can find out at the postoffice - have not written Ruth as yet but am going to try to real soon - Tell Allan to keep me posted on the school
