Somewhere in France May 27 [1918] Dear Folks: - Find a little time to write you again - just got back from a trip to the front - was up for observation - had a fine time - sure is some "fireworks" up there - all kinds of them - you know what war really is - had the pleasure of helping to catch a Hun - believe me I gave him some rough treatment. enjoyed my trip very much - was some good experience for me - I now have a good idea of the trenches and their mode of fighting - also had experience with some

gas - that is a mean thing - the worst trouble of all - when I got back here found a letter waiting for me - dated [April] 21st and addressed to Mills - sure looked good to me - first since leaving the States - mail is coming in now - it takes a long time for mail to get here - but it is sure enjoyed when it does get here - well how are all of you - hope you are as well as I am - I sure feel fine and getting fatter every day - this country sure agrees with me - boys all fine and anxious to get into the fight - no doubt we will be there soon - Cecil has not come

back to the Co. as yet. looking for him this week some time - do not worry about not getting letters - I will write as often as I can - boys all have more time to write than us officers - we have 250 of them to look after and they have only them-selves. there is very little news we can tell but will write as much as I can and the rest I can tell when I return - when I said I had been to the front I mean right up where the fighting is going on at all times - our future homes for a while - we get very little war news here at all - know nothing much about how things are going - same old pace I guess - dont forget to keep

me posted to all news and send the papers when you can - anything from Mo. will look good - some of the boys saw Bill Leis brother in-law the other day - Rimmer I think is his name - guess I will get another letter in a few days - have not heard from Elizabeth yet - give the children my love - will write as often as I can - must close and go to bed - goodnite - Love to all, Your loving son, Kirk.
