July 4th [1918] Dear Folks: - Today is a holiday - wish we were up closer where we could give the Germans some real "fireworks" - the quietest 4th I have spent in many years. a year ago last nite I was commissioned a Lieut. - a year ago today we drove up to Uncle Bills - today I am "somewhere in France" with the American Flag flying over me and the Hand of God protecting me - what more could I ask - last nite I received one from Louise and such a fine one from Elmer - am glad Ruth is taking such an interest in the war work - you had better keep the lodge pocket diplomas as it might never reach me - packages are not allowed to be sent except things that are needed and what the soldiers asks for - papers you can send - just like you always did - have seen a few - got two forwarded to me from Mills - Tuck got a package of Missourians & Conservators - boys sure devour

them - sure do appreciate the rose - will keep it for luck - McKinley Farmer joined us yesterday - we left him at Mills with the diptheria - he sure was glad to get back - yes he came over with the Funston Division - said he saw Bates - he was peeling potatoes - would have loved to seen him - I have plenty of socks - when I write and ask you for them is the only way you can send them. I have plenty to last me for quite awhile - our baggage is very limited so I cant carry so much stuff as I did - your letters are not censored just the ones that leave here - no object to censor the ones coming over - Ruth I sure did enjoy your letter - make them often as I love to hear the "town scandal" - all the boys are fine - longing for a chance at Kaiser Bill - no doubt what ever but what we will get him some of these days - I hope all of you are as well as I am - I sure am having fine health for which I am very thankful - guess you are

receiving my letters OK. - I try to write as often as I can - often times movements of troops prevents me from writing more often - Give my best to all the people in Rich - Don't forget Dad, to elect Morton - I hear Maddox is heis opponent - keep me informed as to politics - hear JOhn Campbell is against Albert Clark - if he beats Clark. Ray Co is an the [MS illegible: 1 wd] - Don't forget JOhn F. Morton, Co "G's" Daddy and one who the boys want - We are fighting for the people in Old Ray and our one wish is that you elect Morton. for us - we have sent a list of the boys woh want the people to help them by electing "Dad" Morton. Must close - Heaps of love to all, Your loving son, Kirk.
