Boncourt, France [January] 8th 1919 Dear Folks:- Received two letters from you yesterday dated [December] 2nd & 9th - sure glad to receive them - mail seems to be getting straightened out gradually - what division is Clarence Minnick in would sure like to see him - I didn't know whether he got across or not - I hope Bob Bates gets cold reception and that he will be treated as a yellow cur - had to drag him into the service and then take the hospital route in place of fighting, gosh, whta "flu" sure is bad - hate to hear of so many deaths - was surprised to hear of Dan's wife - hate to hear of it - she sure was a fine woman - guess it will go hard on Don - hope that each of you escape the "flu" - seems like it ought to be about time for it to begin letting up - have never been able to get any news of the Maddox boy - no tit hardly seems possible that you have two grown children - I am nearing the 25 mark - and Ruth is 19 - my, how time does fly - I hope that not any of us will ever disgrace the name - never bring a heart-ache to you caused by our action - I have changed since I left home in the way of thinking - my thots now are to save money and settle down for a peaceful life - I hope soon to land in U.S. but no one knows - I then am taking a vacation and rest easy - visit kinfolks and eat their ham, etc.
