August 9th [1918] Dear Folks: - Will drop you a short note - still on the front - everybody is OK and feeling fine - has been raining quite a bit the last week - rather cool here and I expect you folks are sweating - got 2 copies of the Rich News yesterday - dated June 3rd & 13th - we don't get second class mail very often- see where Jack Marshall is going to run the Richmond? and Jesse going in furniture business - well papa how is your business - hope it is going better - jsut a few words about the organizations doing relief work here - My best regards to the Red Cross, Salvation Army, and Knights of Columbus - The Red Cross the noblest of all, the kindest, the oen that comes to you when you feel as if all life was gone because smoking was low - but no here comes a box from the Red Cross full of smokes - you go to a hospital who helps you thru the dark days why the Red Cross - The biggest organization in the war today

is the Red Cross - A dollar given to them is the best value that can be put on One Hundred cents - It is all spent for the boys who day and nite face the shot and shell to win "Liberty for the World" - A person that wouldn't give to Red Cross is not fit to live and should be considerd as a German spy would be. The little boxes they give contains, 3 packages of Durham, 2 packages cigarettes and 1 can Tuxedo - a fine present to recieve "over here" where American tobacco is very scarce - Fritz is unusually quite tonite - think think we gave him a few to quiet him and have a good one to give him soon - we are expecting every day to be relieved but nothing doing as yet - suppose everybody is getting ready for school - am wondering where Ruth is going - hope all are well - not much news up here to tell - am feeling fine - Tell everyone hello - am expecting some mail tomorrow - Must close - will write as often as I can - Lots of love to all, Your loving son, Kirk.
