[August] 1st 1918. Dear Folks: - It is 1 o clock p.m. and I just got up= I dont go to bed till 5 o'clock a.m. stay up all nite waiting for Fritzie to come over - we are having good luck on teh front we have had a few hot times but came thru OK. boys are all OK and feeling fine. getting good eats and that is the main thing. received your letter of June 27th - sure enjoyed - in a previous le tter I have todl you of Sampson's death I told you as soon as I could. he died 27th of May. I could not get the statement from the nurse or chaplain as I know not who or where. you mentioning the Hosp. & burial place is my first knowledge of that - papers do not come regular but I have gotten all of April & May - ought to soon be getting some in June - nd class mail is very irregular. the mail service is lots better and we are

getting it more regular. yes Sampson had meningitis. yes they are building a huge army. but we need them - the move we get over here the sooner we will get home - have never seen any of the boys from home who were at Funston - I will soon have passed another mile-stone - will be 24 yrs - this last year passed has been one which I will long remember- the sights I have seen and the experiences I have had have been great - had a letter from Garner Settle - sure did enjoy it - guess Ruth is thinking of going off to school - give her my very best and as a brother my advice to her is to keep always on the alert - watch herself - she will meet temptations but guard against them - she is now going into the world to fight her own battles - hardships will come but grit your teeth and step ahead - I have seen a part of teh world and know from where I talk - Guess Honey is thinking of hiking

(had to quit this afternoon and am finishing this morn - to school very soon. Has Allan come back from the farm? Well Dad how's business? same old run I guess - things are very quiet on the front tonite but you never know when Fritz is going to turn loose - it is now 2 o'clock a.m. - 3 hrs till my bed time - Johnnie sleeps till then and he gets up and I do a little snoozing - have a good dugout and good cots. boys all feeling fine - I never felt better in my life - only a little nervous some times - ha! ha! had a letter from Miss Bertha and one from Louise - sure glad to get them - letters from old Richmond look good to me- I sure enjoy your letters - I will write as often as I can - have plenty of chicken on hand cause it won't be long till I will be back to eat a few of them - Must close - Hope all of you are OK - Give Grandma my love - Goodnite.
