[April 5, 1917] [Thursday] nite Dear Folks:- Have been rather busy and have not written - we are still getting men in and assigning them to different units - got in a bunch tonite- I expect to get them here [Saturday] then ill be back with my Co. Col. Liuxwiler got in today - was talking with him tonite - glad to get him back - he seemed tickled to get here - takes command tomorrow - 1st battalion of our regiment left last nite for "somewhere East" - so you see we are not far off from leaving. might be gone before you get this letter - I cant say when - will write you when I get east. things are on the move here. everybody anxious to go - received your package- those things will sure come in hand - received your letter - am sorry to hear about Effie. he ought to be shot. might save some other girl - I have been expecting to hear of some wrong done- I want Mis Bertha to have a picture any kind she wants she can have - for she is some real friend of mine- I have a lot of equipment to buy - about $75 00 worth - dont know whether I can send any money home yet or not. will try to send some to straighten

up my debts- want to leave this country owing no one. I was not expecting us to move till middle of May but that time will see us east or sailing the pond - I believe the war will end this year - Germans have paid dearly and won nothing - am anxious to ge tacross and get it over so I can come back home and live in peace- have you sent any pictures to me- two is enough for me- will write again Sun or Mon- may be on my way East by then. I am feeling fine. hope all of you are well. dont know any more news- guess Uncle Bob is getting to be some chauffer by now- about bed time- Goodnite, Love to all, Your loving son, Kirk.
