[November 23, 1918] My dear Cousin Joe, A few lines to wish you & all with you a happy Christmas many, very many joyous returns. The news is good. We hope for a lasting & settled peace - we are all glad yr. President is coming over to preside at the peace deliberations & regulations. What we owe to yr. dear country & to the help so generously given by the colonies. Victory such as we have won no one ever anticipated. I hope it may now be ratified & the whole civilized would settle down to be better & higher. Our warriors are still in the field - or rather advancing [left margin] could accomplish it". Anyone advocating any [ms illegible: 1 wd] of the terms of peace [ms illegible: 1 wd] at [ms illegible: 1 wd] be [ms illegible: 1 wd] for ever. We are not yet finished with [ms illegible: 1 wd] fiendish for Hubert is gone by road with the cavalry. they passed over the field of [ms illegible: 1 wd] last Thursday en route Though Belgium, he said is [ms illegible: 1 wd] triumphal but when we get to Germany we don't know what awaits all well here or nearly so. Edward with the advanced [ms illegible: 1 wd] has been in Germany since [October] no news from him later than 3rd [ms illegible: 1 wd] then he described the snares laid for the cold & tired air man desending wet & weary - The foul foe retreating left hot coffee steaming on the table some drank & fell in agony - arsenic sweetened the coffee - An officer's Kit packed most temptingly - the scrambled for possessions be who caught it was blown to pieces A live cat nailed to a door - he who liberated blown to bits - the citizens gathered on the bridge to cheer for their liberation on the bridge & all sent the air - "only prayer can save me wrote Edward" - "out [ms illegible: 1 wd] is gruesome & only revenge
