October 22, 1946 Mr. John Lewis Barkley 5366 W. 50 Highway Merriam, Kansas Dear John, Family, Hired Help, Cats, Dogs, and Relations: I just returned to the office last week, and I guess you think it strange that I haven't previously written you a letter, but, John, I have been extremely busy. Being gone from the office for over a month, I know you and your family, mother and daughter can bear with me on this situation. It certainly was good to see you after so long a time elapsed between the last war and this war. John, I don't know who I would rather have seen than you and to meet your good wife, especially your mother-in-law, and I did fall in love with your daughter. I hope she will have no boy friends until I return to Missouri. I still think I have a chance with her. Don't you think so? Now, as far as the convention, that was quite a headache. I am sorry that I was unable to put in more time with you and your family. I know that you understand what a convention is, but I am afraid that you will have to explain to you daughter and mother-in-law as to just what they may expect of a national commander. John, you have been elected Zone Councilman of that zone, and I understand they are putting you up for the Department Commander. I hope you will accept this job and lend the boys a little hand, for I know it will be appreciated not only by me but by the whole organization. Everyone to whom I have talked speaks most highly of you. Of course, they don't know you like I do; nevertheless, I'll let them talk anyway. I will have to apologize for the Mrs., for she was busier than I with those old hens of the Auxiliary. I received a call from her last evening from Estes Park, Colorado, which is approximately 75 miles from Denver. She said she is going to Denver and then will be on her way to the state of Washington to make visits in Tacoma and Seattle, and then I think she is coming back to Illinois. When I hear from her again I am going to try to get her to stop over and be with you folks a day or two. I have so much mail here that I just don't know where to start in, but I am going to let everyone know in brief that his mail has been received and he will have to bear with me and the Adjutant until we can answer all correspondence. As I say again, John, I appreciate everyone you have done, and I am trying to find out the cost of republishing "No Hard Feelings". I gave that to Jim Lucas

Do give your wife and daughter a great big kiss for me, mother to and tell them I am sorry I did not have more time to visit with them, but I hope to be seeing them one of these days after this job is over and I have a chance to run around and visit my friends.
