William M. Floyd letter to John L. Barkley - April 24, 1947
Transcript
April 24, 1947 Mr. John L. Barkley 5326 W. 50 Highway Merriam, Kansas Dear Corporal and Family: I am in receipt of that seven months' long lost letter which I presume you sent around by the Panama Canal or horse truck. You speak of S. 932, and want to know how we stand on this. Who in the h--- do you think introduced this bill? This was brought up at the National Convention of the Army-Navy Legion of Valor at Buffalo, New York, at which time they felt they could not or they would not legislate on this matter. I in turn told them that I would introduce the bill if they would write it up and have something favorable to say on it if and when it came before the Senate and the House. Also I have mustered quite a bit of support on this bill, and I believe that it will become a law, not this year but next year, because all the Congressmen are too busy loaning money to other countries at this time. I am glad that you saw Mr. and Mrs. Ed Walmer. When you see them again give them my best regards. I would like to visit them for about two weeks. Also give your wife, mother, and little girl my best regards. I would certainly like to see them again. Mrs. Floyd wanted to know why the family did not write. Maybe your daughter could drop us a line after school. Now, on the convention. D--- your soul. I expect to see you at the convention. I do not know just what expense account will be allowed at this time, but I am going to ask the National Council of Administration to approve having a Congressional Medal of Honor man at the convention this year. I am glad to know that you have relatives in Pennsylvania. That should be an incentive and give me something to shoot at. Do you attend any of the meetings of Post 318? Yours in Regularship, [signature] W.M. Floyd National Commander WMF:DME P.S. I can procure a compiled Buckram bound issue of the "Stars and Stripes" for the period [February] 8, 1918, to June 13, 1919, although there are only a few volumes left. $15.00 each was the price, but I can get it for $7.50. Do you want one? If so, send the Quartermaster $7.50, and he will let you have a copy tout de suite. This is something all the members should have. W.M.F.
