HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 54 WHEREAS, the Missouri House of the legislature has learned with deep regret of the death of John Lewis Barkley, and WHEREAS, Mr. Barkley was born August 28, 1895 on a farm near Holden, Johnson County, Missouri, and WHEREAS, Mr. Barkley serving in the Army in France during World War I was cited for bravery for single handedly breaking up two German assaults on a hill the Allied Forces were trying to hold during the Meuse-Argonne battle, and WHEREAS, he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor on the field by General John J. Pershing, and WHEREAS, he was also awarded The French Medialle Militaire by General Foch in the same ceremony, and WHEREAS, he was also awarded the British Distinguished Service Cross, the French Croix de Guerre with 3 palms, The Belgian War Cross, the Italian War Cross the Medal de Bravere of [Montenegro], and WHEREAS, he became the most decorated Missouri soldier of World War I, and WHEREAS, the passing of this brave and honored soldier and citizen is not only a loss to his family but to the state and nation as well, and THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the chief clerk of the House of Representatives be instructed to send properly inscribed copies of this resolution to the wife, Mrs. Marguerite Barkley, Overland Park, Kansas; his daughter, Joan Barkley, Overland Park, Kansas; to Mrs. Corrine Thompson, Stephenville, Texas, Mrs. Elizabeth Ozias, 304 Clark St., Warrensburg, Missouri, and Mrs. Lela Teaters, 100 East Armour, Kansas City, Missouri.
