Fort Riley [Kansas] 1918 [January] 18 Dear Mother. Every thing is now pretty well and am a great deal better. My fever has gone down and I am out of danger now. I think I am getting off pretty easy for lots of the boys goes to the operating table. My doctor who worked with me wore a Masons ring I told him that my dad was a Mason he said is that so. I got more attention from that doctor than any other soldier in my room. How is cockies ford? can he run it yet or does he think its a complicated affair. I may be out in the spring to run it some for him. What does people think about this war. I have some good stuff

that it is going to close in May. I hear that the farm boys are going to be turned loose to put in a crop, if so I am comming. Have we ever moved the old house away yet. We sure had some killing in Funston the other night. I think those guards was wise ore something or they would of known something of the affair when that captain was knocking five men in the head. I have guarded around that bank as many of a night. He would not run very far when I told him to stop. Why dont Lela ever write I must close. Answer soon as ever John.

Barkley mentioned he would get a furlough to come home if soldiers were allowed to leave for planting. Also, he noted an incident that happened near the bank in Camp Funston. |
