Fort Riley [Kansas] [December] 29 1917 Dear Mother. I am now feeling fine and over the measels but still in the hospital but you can address my mail to funston as usual for I am going back tomorrow, sooner than I expected. My measels were so litel and my systoms was in so good a fix that the doctor is going to pull some crooked work and get me out. Has it been very cold in [Missouri]? It has been 14 below zero but here and not a flake of snow. The mail is still tangled up bad and I dont think I get half of my mail I did not get the gloves nor the afidavid that dock sent me and havent gotton any Christmas yet. I wonder if Santy has forgotton one of his soldiers? I got a telegram from Joe today wishing me a Merry Xmas and a happy new year.

[page 2] Does Lela and Frank still ride to school? I wrote to Ann the other day for the third time and no ans yet. How is Dad standing the winter Did they ship any of my cattle. When does Bill Jeter have to go to the army is he still scarred. I am loosing out on my rifle practice. I suppose I wont know how to shoot a gun when I get back to Funston. Lots of the boys are pulling for the Eastern training camps this means France very soon. How is Flota Athens? I probably know more about her than you. Well I must close for they are owing me several letters. You son John
