from Cpl John L Barkley Co K 4th infantry April 6, 1919. Some Where in Germany My dear Mother. I am sending you a little Souvenir that you must keep untill my return. It is our division insignia with the names of the three fronts where the third fought and the pictures of the places where we lost the most men is taking. The blue and white stripes is our divisional insignia which we war on the point of our left sholder. You look close in my picture and you will see where it is worn. The names of our divisional commanders are written under each picture

Just one year ago today I was 500 miles from land and the waves were batting and tossing our ship. All of us was watching for subs. Our gunners stood at their duns with their fingers upon the electric button and their eye upon the wave. We came across on the fastest ships afloat maned with the best crew and the best gunners. The subs never bothered us I must close. Am still well and heardy. Eat all of my pas and past of the other fellows if I get a chance. Answer soon your son Cpl John L Barkley.
