Some Where in Germany April 17 1919. Dear Mother. you all are owing me many letters but here comes me writing again. How are you all anyway is Frank working or going to school. How is Lela making it how often does she come up? I suppose Dock is working his head off. How many acres of corn is he putting out. Dock cant do everything that is to be done at home I know. Dad is to old and Frank is too ung so there leaves it all for him to do and he is not strong any way.

Now if you all want my help and need it bad enough the way for you to do is to have an afadived maid out sworn before a notary republic and send it directy to me and I will work from this end and you all can work from that I realize how bad I am needed there at home and I am doeing no good over here. Of course I can stay untill perminant peace is signed about three of four years but if a man stayed here that long he would not be worth a thing. I am not homesick or anything like that but I know it is settled and I

[page 3] am through soldering and there is no need keeping me over here when I might made something on the outside. We boys are getting the best of grub now and can get furloughs most any time. We take trips up and down the Rhein in pleasure boats and see the most picture esque scens you can imagine. Now you all get your heads together and pull every string from the war department and all and I might get in by Christmas. Must close. Answer soon Your son John.
