May 19 1918 Dear folks at home. Just received your letter today written last month 15th. I thought you all would have known I was over here this time. I am fine and dandy and hvnt been sick since I have arived here. when you address a letter to me address it as follows. PVT. John L Barkley. Co K 4th U.S. inft American Ex Forces A.E.F. I am working at my same old trade that I was in the National Army. am feeling better than I ever did in my life. France is a beautiful country but they say there is a war going on over here. I think there is myself! When the war is over and I come back I will tell you all about France. All about its good wine Etc.

How is Mr. Reed? How is Mr Nichols, Mr Worden, Mike H Mr. Cates, and Bill Suancey. How is George Potter since his sick spell? Has he been able to work. You talk about boose in the states. They never saw any liquor. you can go into any wine joint and get any thing from fifty year old wine up to alcoil and believe me the soldiers show the French how to drink. Any soldier can go into any saloon and can get drink for .40. police know it but some of the boys gets on a stew some time. I dont kneed any money or anything else. I was wise and brought a good supply with me and you know uncle Sam always pays his soldiers anywhere they may be. I must close for it is getting late. Answer soon for it is getting late. John.
