Fort Riley [Kansas] [December] 21 1917 Dear folks at home. I am still here and all together and am tot sick yet. How is everything? since this cold spell has been on the menigitus is sencing to some extent, but still they kick off just the same. We have several cases of mumps here now I dont know whether I will take them or not. This is sure some place her where we are bound to, doctors darting in and out every minute but only one [Red Cross] nurse. I don't know whether I will take the Menenjitus or not the doctors say my systoms is strong and there is a chance for me not to take it; my time was up last week but one cant tell when it is going to strike them. I dont think I am going to get too come home any more for they are going to ship out any time we know not the hour.

[page 2] I have never gotton my gloves or my afidavid yet. it may be down to the barracks. How is Bill Teter? when does he have to join us boys? Why won't Lela ever write to me? she must not think that I am not going to answer for I seldome ever write my eyes are so weak, and most of my time is taken up writing to a little Holden girl who is a clerk whom your acquiainted. Well I will have to close my eyes are watering so. Tell Dock I wish he would send me a little jack I can't get out to my company to get my pay and the Captain wont send it for the mail is lost so bad. Tell him to send it in a registered leter and I will be sure and get it. Answer soon. John B
