Camp Funston [November] 13 1917 Dear Cocky, well as I have just come in from the trenches I will try and drop you a few lines. we have been living in the trenches three days sleeping and eating there seven miles from camp. Some of the old boys are sure sick of army life. I enjoy it or act like I do. I have been acting Corpril for the last fiew days Wittey has been sick I sure made good and if witte dosnt do better I will get his job. Almost every barracks in this division 356 is quarnteen for Spinal mentigitus, some German spy is scattering it. They have secrete service men watching all the time.

[page 2] Seventeen have died in this 356 divison from that trouble, every one is sick almost from this terrible san and dust storms. About that life insurance I am going to see the Captain and see into it Saturday that will be alright wont it? Although one Ma take one of those dam diseases and pass by the board any week for this is sure a hell-whole for them. Old Dump won $180.00 last night off of the machine gun Co. I am wearing one of his 180 rings it sure is a peach all of the Lieutenants sure cast their eye side ways at it. We got our target guns and amunition to peaches today they shoot a 22 bullet but high

Our Captain asked us what we would do if we were in a battle and see a ded man by our sides the hole Co never said anything, and then I spoke up and said, "Take his shells" and the old Captain answered A.t. Now answer soon for I dont get any real news or letter only from some dam weak girl. As ever John L. Barkley.
