[January] 16 1918 Dear Cocky. Well I think as far as any women’s concern by the time I get out of here I wont be very much. These god-dam mumps are going hard as hell with me. gone down of corse. I have been one of the sickest sun of a b in Fort Riley. You come d- near getting your insurance. My fever was 105 and my pulse was 140 got several shost in the arms. These mumps has settled in my right nut and in my appendix one of my second lieutenants was up to see me yesterday and brought my pay. He wanted to know my trouble and I told him, he asked me if they were talking of operating on me. I told him yes. he told me to wait till the nurses went out, he had something he wanted

to tell me. So they went out in a fiew minuts and this is what he had to say. "Let them take your appendix out but fight till you die before they put a knife on your stones, show these dam doctors that you are a soldier. Some Lieutenant. I am a great deal better now but still have some headache. I had three first lieutenant doctors one specilast and the major one night. I have every thing I want to eat and sweet milk butter milk or anything else I call for. Yes I got your $five and didnt get your corn shucking pass till it was too late. No I never got any boxes or anything else Christmas. Old Dump is not in the guard house he is

[page 3] getting along fine. I got a letter from Annie Coleman a week or so ago but havn't answered it yet. Have been getting lots of letters since I have been in here! But not from home why dont Lela write or Maw or Knick. Well I must close and scute down in bed. Answer soon John here is a stamp answer this letter Base Hospital ward 22 section H Fort Riley [Kansas]
