in the Hospital November 5 1917 Miss. Anna Barkley, Dear Sister, Well I guess you begin to think I have forgotten you but I have not, I did not know your address, I knew it was at the University H but I did not know where there. I am in the hospital at Fort Riley with the phneumonia this is sure some hospital [Red Cross] nurses and doctors but they do not give one drop of medicine. They drag 6 or 7 ded out of here every morning. you havent anything on me telling tales about ded I awoke the other morning and the man beside me had holt of my wrist tightly

I shook him and he was ded; died with phneumonia i loosened his fingers from around my wrist and let him lay, How is that? I was at home last Saturday and Sunday, took them all one surprise all was glad to see me even down to tiger. When are you going home write and tell me and if it is on Saturday I can get a pass and can go too. when does people think this dam war will close write and tell me what people think for i never hear anything out here. well I will have to close.
