May 16 1919 My dear Anna It has been so long since I have herd from you that It must be impossible for you to write. How is Kansas City now. I hear the states are going dry soon. that will put a hummer on [Kansas City]. The boys will have to come back over here to get anything to drink. This country is sure a sight they all drink like fishes women and all. Ann I tried some more adventure. I went down to the Avation field and went up in a abserver's plain. A captain and I. We flew over Andernach Coblenz Cologne Bonn and lots of towns. Not of much note. Stayed in the air 43 minute It sure was fine went up two thosand feet. Ge when you look down it was a sight. the Rhine river looked like a branch.

Flying is nothing. The worst part is when you leave the ground and when you come down to land. We do you think peace will be signed? If them old dutchman won't sign it It will be their - -. I am comming home soon. Will be at home before August the 1. Does that sound long or short. I think they aim to get us out of this country and let these people settle their Arguments. It will take years to settle this war. A dutch boy told me the other day that Germany could never pay this debt. I told him he ought to have thought of this when they were raising so much hell. You know I stood and watch them tear to pieces the great Cathedral at Rheims. Well Ann I must close. I must not tell you all I know. Answer soon. Cpl John L Barkley Co K 4th inft.
